Reproductive biology of the male Cape porcupine
نویسنده
چکیده
The reproductive tract of the male Cape porcupine is morphologically and histologically similar to that of New World hystricomorph rodents. Males are reproductively active throughout the year and attained sexual maturity (complete spermatogenesis) at an age of 8-18 months. Testes weight, epididymides weight and seminiferous tubule diameter attained asymptotic values at the age of 23-30 months. A tendency towards seasonality in the activity of accessory glands, preceded and accompanied by an increase in circulating plasma testosterone values, may be con sidered as a factor enforcing seasonal breeding in females. Testosterone conccntrations in pubertal males were significantly higher than those recorded in sexually mature males.

Background and Aims: Cola acuminata pod extract (CAPE) is used in Nigerian traditional medicine to treat low sperm count in males. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of CAPE on the reproductive system of male albino rats. Materials and Methods: Preliminary acute toxicity testing, phytochemical screening, proximate analysis, and determination of vitamin E concentration were perf...

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is widely reported to have adverse effect on most systems of the body. This study investigated the effects of DM on male reproductive parameters and possible role of aqueous leave extract from Basella alba in ameliorating such effects. Methods: Male rats (n = 40) aged 8-10 weeks were randomly divided into 4 equa...
متن کاملENDOCRINE CORRELATES OF THE ANNUAL REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF THE PORCUPINE Hystrix africaeaustralis
The Cape porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis is a large (12-18 kg) nocturnal hystricomorph rodent occurring throughout southern Africa where it is sometimes used as a source of food and often regarded as a nuisance by crop-producing fanners. They live in family groups, these generally comprising an adult male, adult female and varying numbers of offspring of successive litters. Reproduction is c...
متن کاملReproduction in the Cape porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis: an ecological perspective
Cape porcupines, Hystrix africaeaustralis, apparently have a wide ecological tolerance and are found extensive ly throughout Southern Africa. These fossorial hystrico morph rodents are monogamous, live in extended family groups, breed seasonally in summer rainfall areas, and adult pairs produce only a single litter each year. A litter interval ofabout one year is maintained through lactationa...
متن کاملUrinary characteristics of the Cape porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis: effects of photoperiod and temperature.
The Cape porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis is a large (11-18 kg), nocturnal, burrowing and group-living rodent. It experiences a metabolic response to seasonal acclimatization and is a hind gut fermenter. Changes in the urinary electrolyte and free urinary catecholamine concentrations of Cape porcupines were related to combined changes of ambient temperature and photoperiod regime. Three group...
